Foldforming

Yesterday we had the chance to work with the technique of foldforming. Josh’s main spark of interest in foldforming came after purchasing Charles Lewton-Brain’s book “Foldforming.” This technique produces some incredible results.

Josh started out with small sheets of copper. He took each sheet and folded it over onto itself. Then placed the copper sheet into the forge. Following the forge, it was submerged into water completing the annealing process. Once the sheet cooled down it was ready to be hammered and worked into the shape needed.

This technique was used for a gate being built for Tupper Homes. The initial plan was to use cast iron medallion, but Josh had the great idea of incorporating foldforming into this project to accent the gate. Stay tuned for photos of the finished and installed gate. It was a lot of fun working on all of this with Josh yesterday. I hope you enjoy. Please, feel free to ask any questions or let us know what you think in the comment section.

aluminum projects

This past month at Custom Iron by Josh we have been working on many aluminum projects. If you are looking for high quality railing, fencing, gates etc. and perhaps live in an area where the upkeep on wrought iron would be too much of an inconvenience we would love to introduce you to the perks of using aluminum! We use Solid 6061 Aluminum to be exact. Aluminum requires little to no maintenance and is prone to rust and peeling of the paint. Aluminum is lighter in weight but still looks just as elegant as wrought iron. Take a look at this aluminum railing we recently installed and let us know what you think!

Until Next Time,

wine bottle railing

A couple of weeks ago Robert and Shanna Price came into the shop looking for a fun new look for their kitchen. Our wine bottle holder caught Shanna’s eye and and Josh came up with the idea to incorporate wine bottles into their kitchen railing. He did this by forging rod iron vines and leaves to hold the bottles securely in the railing. Other elements of the railing included red stained glass in the shape of diamonds. The stained glass diamonds were inspired by the Price’s chandeliers and geometric shapes throughout the house. For the finish we used an early 1900’s blacksmith wax recipe instead of modern day paint. Let us know what you think!

kanji symbol gate

If you are familiar with Josh James Studio Jewelry line you know that Josh has done some soul mate Kanji bracelets. We were happy to fabricate our first Kanji symbol gate for David and Janet Bruce. They chose 3 Kanji symbols that were significant to them and we were able to forge them into their own personal gate. Hope you all enjoy!

St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church

Check out these forged acorns and leaves! This project has been constructed in honor of St Martin de Porres Catholic Church to remind them of the Nuns that held catechism under a large live oak tree inspiring the oak tree motif. The finished project design will be six forged candelabras to hold one 7 day candle and 25 one hour prayer candles.  Rusty Welch at Custom Iron by Josh hand forged the acorns and leaves for small detail to add to the trees. We also added texture to all the limbs and a weld texture to the trunk of the trees. The final finish of the trees is an oil finish with beautiful bronze highlights!                     Click HERE to see how its made!
